Finding funders
Funding looks very different for every organization, which is why we’ve kept this subsection
short. What every funder requires, however, is a business plan, which is why this section as a
whole is long . As we already stated, most important to your funders will be:
• A needs assessment that clearly defines and demonstrates the health gap your Program
will fill, with supporting sources
• A proposal that shows your Program can meet the demonstrated need, with evidence of
cultural competency, engagement with the community, previous experience and partner
agencies that can vouch for you
• A case for how your Program will be sustainable in the long term
When sourcing funders, look first at programs that have historically provided grants or donations
to programs like yours; that have missions closely aligned with yours; or that have mandates your
Program can help fulfill. For example, if you’re serving a rural community, an organization like the
U.S. Federal Office of Rural Health Policy may be a good place to start. If, however, your program
offers dental services, start with insurance companies, who will save money on the ED visits your
program diverts . Other potential funders or partners include:
Health providers and Clinics Philanthropic/grantmaking organizations
Hospitals Fraternities/sororities
Health Regulators Sports organizations
Individuals Large retail chains
Local government agencies Pharmaceutical suppliers
Civic & care organizations Medical suppliers
Health insurance plans Banks and Financial
Employers Supermarkets
Community leadership Restaurants
Public Safety (EMS, LE) Schools
Local TV, Radio, Newspaper Religious organizations
