Bringing Smiles to School: Celebrating Tooth Taxi During National Children’s Dental Health Month
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a nationwide campaign led by the American Dental Association to raise awareness about the importance of children’s oral health. The campaign focuses on preventing tooth decay, the most common chronic disease in childhood, through daily brushing and flossing, regular dental visits, and healthy, low-sugar diets.
As a proud member of Mobile Healthcare Association, Tooth Taxi is helping turn that mission into action by delivering dental care directly to children where they learn and grow.
Meet Tooth Taxi: A Dental Clinic on Wheels
Tooth Taxi is best described as a dental clinic on wheels that brings care directly to children in familiar, trusted environments such as schools and community centers. Since launching in 2008, this 39-foot mobile dental van has provided free dental care to more than 26,000 children and young people across Oregon, delivering services valued at over $9 million — all with the goal of expanding access to care for underserved youth.
Operated under The Dental Foundation of Oregon, the charitable arm of the Oregon Dental Association, Tooth Taxi was created to address a persistent and urgent need.
Too many children, especially those in rural and underserved communities, were missing school because of untreated dental pain. Families often face transportation challenges, long travel distances, limited provider availability, insurance barriers, and financial strain. Tooth Taxi was designed to remove these obstacles so children can receive the care they need to stay healthy, succeed in school, and build confidence that lasts a lifetime.
What Happens During a Tooth Taxi Visit
When Tooth Taxi arrives at a school or community location, the team parks, sets up, and begins seeing students who have completed consent forms from a parent or guardian.
A typical visit includes oral health screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and the distribution of oral hygiene kits. Students with urgent needs such as pain or infection are prioritized so they can receive care as quickly as possible. The mobile clinic contains two fully equipped operatories, allowing the team to provide both preventive and restorative services on site. When necessary, care is continued over multiple visits.
Over the years, Tooth Taxi has:
– Screened more than 26,600 students at 620 sites in Oregon.
– Provided oral hygiene education to over 25,700 children.
– Logged nearly 5,000 volunteer dental professional hours to serve communities in need.
These services — from preventive care like sealants and fluoride to restorative work — are provided free to participating students, helping families who may face financial or access barriers.

What makes the experience especially meaningful is its familiarity and convenience.
Children remain in their school environment surrounded by trusted adults. For many, it is their first dental visit. The team works intentionally to create a calm and positive atmosphere that builds confidence around oral healthcare. After treatment, children go home with a summary of services provided so families are informed and can continue care with a dental provider in the future.
A Story That Says It All
One recent moment perfectly captures the impact of Tooth Taxi.
While helping coordinate appointments at a school, a second grade teacher pulled a team member aside. One of her students was experiencing a toothache and needed help. Thanks to the quick action of school staff, the child’s parents were contacted and completed the necessary paperwork. Within an hour, the student was on board the Tooth Taxi.
During the exam, the team discovered an infected molar. They were able to numb the area and treat the tooth right there on site. After receiving care, the student returned to class smiling and told her teacher, “My tooth doesn’t hurt anymore.”
That simple statement reflects something much larger. Relief from pain meant better focus in school, improved sleep at night, and less stress for her family. The ability to say, “We’ve taken care of it,” lifts a tremendous weight from parents who may have been struggling to find care. These small but powerful moments are the foundation of the program’s mission.
Breaking Down Barriers to Care
The barriers to pediatric dental care are real and widespread. Tooth Taxi regularly sees challenges related to transportation, provider shortages in rural areas, difficulty for parents to take time away from work, insurance limitations, and dental anxiety. In some communities, there are few or no providers accepting new pediatric patients with Medicaid.
By bringing care directly to schools and community locations, Tooth Taxi removes many of these barriers. Children receive exams, preventive services such as sealants and fluoride, and restorative treatment before small problems become painful emergencies. Because dental pain is one of the leading causes of missed school days, providing care on site helps children remain healthy, present, and ready to learn.
Why Mobile Healthcare Matters
Tooth Taxi joined Mobile Healthcare Association because mobile programs face unique challenges as well as unique opportunities. Being part of a community that understands the logistics, innovation, and impact of mobile healthcare has strengthened their work in Oregon. The association has provided opportunities to connect with peers, share ideas, and continue improving care delivery.
Mobile healthcare is not supplemental. It is an essential part of improving access and health outcomes for communities that might otherwise go without care.
A Message for National Children’s Dental Health Month
In honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month, Tooth Taxi shares a simple but powerful message. Oral health is part of overall health, and every child deserves access to care.
Small daily habits make a lifelong difference. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, drinking water, choosing healthy foods, and seeing a dental provider regularly all contribute to strong and healthy smiles.
Most importantly, families should know they are not alone. If access to care feels difficult, there are programs and people working every day to bring care closer to home.
Mobile Healthcare Association is proud to spotlight Tooth Taxi and to celebrate the vital role mobile dental programs play in ensuring every child has the opportunity for a healthy smile and a healthy future.
