Living with type 1 diabetes is a journey, and having the right support can make all the difference. That’s where Beyond Type 1, a fantastic global non-profit, comes in. We help people find new ways to connect, educate, and we champion the diabetes community. One of our most impactful programs is “Beyond Barriers.”

Think of “Beyond Barriers” as a bridge. It’s all about helping people reach the care, education, and empowerment they need, especially in communities that often get overlooked. What makes it so special? It’s built on a powerful idea: working with the community, not just for them.

Beyond Barriers is a health equity program designed to raise diabetes awareness and improve support in underrepresented communities. By focusing on earlier diagnoses and better management, the program aims to reduce disparities in diabetes care. It operates in cities with high populations of non-white and Hispanic individuals—such as Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, DC, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Tampa, and the greater New York/New Jersey area—selected based on local disparities, access to care, and existing community partnerships.

Rooted in the pillars of awareness, access, and support, Beyond Barriers combines virtual and in-person engagement with targeted digital outreach to connect with those most impacted. Through collaborations with local organizations and experts, it helps raise awareness of diabetes risk factors, improve access to timely diagnosis, and provide ongoing education so individuals can thrive post-diagnosis.

At its core, “Beyond Barriers” believes that the best solutions come from the people who live with diabetes every day. Instead of just telling communities what they need, Beyond Type 1 actually listens. We chat with individuals, families, and local leaders to understand their unique challenges. This back-and-forth, collaborative approach ensures that everything we create,  from programs to educational materials, truly fits the community’s culture, language, and specific needs. It’s a “nothing about us without us” philosophy that builds real trust and makes their efforts last.

Beyond Barriers also plays a crucial role in supporting valuable resources like “Beyond Diagnosis” This isn’t just a basic info sheet; it’s a comprehensive guide designed to help people not just cope with a diabetes diagnosis, but thrive. It’s packed with practical tips, emotional support, and clear strategies for navigating life with type 1. It helps with that initial shock, explains treatment plans, offers insights into daily management, and connects people to a wider support network.

By making “Beyond Diagnosis” available through “Beyond Barriers,” Beyond Type 1 ensures that those in underrepresented areas, who might not have easy access to specialists or tons of educational materials, get the vital info and encouragement they need to take charge of their health and live full, amazing lives. It turns a tough moment into an opportunity for strength and resilience.

You know what else makes a huge difference? Real people. At Beyond Type 1 we nail this with our incredible ambassador program. These aren’t just representatives; they’re individuals living with diabetes themselves and caregivers, often from the very communities “Beyond Barriers” is trying to reach. Their personal experience makes all the difference – they can connect with newly diagnosed individuals and families on a truly empathetic level. Ambassadors become mentors, and advocates, sharing their stories, offering practical advice, and showing everyone that a fulfilling life with diabetes is totally within reach. This peer-to-peer support is incredibly powerful for breaking down feelings of isolation and building a strong sense of community.

At Beyond Type 1, we know that teaming up with other organizations can supercharge our impact. Our partnership with the Mobile Healthcare Association is a perfect example. A big reason why people can’t get care, especially in rural or less affluent areas, is distance (among many other variables). Mobile healthcare units, often staffed with medical pros and essential supplies, can bridge this gap. By working with the Mobile Healthcare Association, “Beyond Barriers” can reach so many more people, bringing diabetes education, screenings, and support right to communities that might otherwise feel cut off. This alliance means “Beyond Diagnosis” materials get into more hands, ambassadors can connect face-to-face, and people have a direct way to get information or find support. It’s a brilliant example of how working together can truly make sure the message of empowerment and access reaches everyone, no matter where they live or their financial situation.

So, what’s the big picture? “Beyond Barriers” truly shows our thoughtful and compassionate approach to helping the community. By co-creating programs, we ensure everything is relevant and effective, building solutions with the community. And finally, smart partnerships, like the one with the Mobile Healthcare Association, expand these programs’ reach, breaking down those tough barriers to care.

At its heart, Beyond Barriers reflects Beyond Type 1’s commitment to equity, empowerment, and meaningful collaboration. Through partnerships like the one with the Mobile Healthcare Association we’re hoping to reach more people where they are, breaking down barriers, and making sure no one faces diabetes alone. This is how we turn a diagnosis into a new beginning—backed by knowledge, connection, and community.
