We Are Here: Lowering Barriers with Mobile Health – Film and Discussion
University-based health programs focus most of their clinical training in brick-and-mortar facilities, mostly in the hospital setting. While hospitals are valuable places to learn the latest technologies and methods for treating chronic and advanced diseases, community outreach is neglected or relegated to community health centers. Mobile health is an ideal model to provide community-engaged delivery of services and health student education. However, developing community partnerships, tracking and communicating with volunteer trainees, and quickly registering participants are challenging. In this presentation, we will demonstrate three methods to optimize the efficiency and effective delivery of health screening, dental, and vision health. The first is developing and utilizing collaborations with community-based organizations. Then we will describe the use of an electronic health record that is easy to learn, update and use for data tracking. Finally, we will explain the value and methods to track volunteers using a web-based application. In a workshop format, we will watch brief segments of a new film entitled “We Are Here: Lowering Barriers with Mobile Health.” by award-winning filmmaker Chris Newberry. Between segments, we will discuss the specific skills highlighted in the film: community partnerships, volunteer organizations, and mobile electronic health records. Each participant in the workshop will leave with access to the entire film to share with their institutions and instructions on the use of the above mentioned skills. Learning Objectives: Recognize the value of partnerships with community-based organizations. Describe how to leverage automation and technology to help with volunteer management. Learn how to utilize a modifiable, low barrier electronic health record to improved efficiency.
