Enhancing Healthcare Access and Training Future Nursing Leaders Through a Mobile Health Program

clinic

In rural areas, access to healthcare services remains a significant challenge. Recognizing this issue, a college of nursing launched a Mobile Health Program to address these disparities. This program provides comprehensive primary care services while collaborating with multiple organizations to offer specialty services. Engaging nursing students in this endeavor has enhanced healthcare delivery and works towards increasing the nursing workforce in rural communities. Methods: The MHU Program actively cultivates collaborations with various stakeholders, including rural healthcare organizations, urban medical centers, community agencies, and local leaders. These alliances facilitate resource sharing, knowledge exchange, and collaborative problem-solving, enabling the program to effectively address complex healthcare challenges in rural settings. Strategic partnerships ensure a diverse array of services, such as preventive care, chronic disease management, and telehealth consultations, thereby addressing the varied healthcare needs of rural residents. Workshops and continuing education ensure rural providers and students stay updated with current knowledge. Collaborative problem-solving networks address any barriers encountered and fosters a solution-focused mindset. Results: The program has yielded significant results in expanding access to healthcare by leveraging partnerships with >25 different stakeholders/organizations. We developed new partnerships through the MHU program while strengthening relationships established through previous projects. Sixty students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs gain clinical hours through the MHU program. They gain hands-on experience in assessing and addressing the needs of rural and underserved populations. Their participation enhances their clinical knowledge, fosters a commitment to health equity, and builds relationships with healthcare organizations for future employment opportunities. Conclusion: The program represents a transformative approach to rural healthcare delivery, combining innovative strategies with strategic partnerships to overcome access barriers and promote health equity. The program cultivates future healthcare leaders capable of addressing rural healthcare challenges by involving students. Through ongoing research, collaboration, and technology, the evolving program positively impacts the health and well-being of rural residents. Learning Objectives: Discuss the significance of strategic partnerships in expanding the impact of healthcare initiatives, including how alliances with various stakeholders facilitate resource sharing and collaborative problem-solving. Identify effective approaches to engaging diverse stakeholders and building strategic partnerships to enhance access to healthcare in rural and underserved communities. Describe how engaging nursing students in clinical practice through a mobile health program fosters health equity and cultivates relationships with future employers.
