Mobile health clinics are essential in providing healthcare to vulnerable communities, yet vital work often goes unnoticed. One of the most powerful tools mobile clinics can use to elevate their impact and secure necessary support is storytelling. This workshop aims to teach attendees how to harness the power of storytelling to advocate for their services, engage with local communities, and attract funding for sustainability. Attendees will learn how to craft compelling narratives that not only highlight their work but also humanize the people involved—the patients, the staff, and the community members. The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to the core elements of a compelling story. Attendees will learn the importance of structure, character development, and emotional resonance in crafting stories that are engaging and impactful. We will discuss how to highlight the challenges faced by patients, highlight the transformative effect of mobile clinics, and emphasize the role of mobile clinics in improving health outcomes.
Through real-world examples and interactive exercises, participants will practice telling their own clinic’s stories. They will explore how to adapt their stories to different audiences (local communities, patients, funders, and policymakers). We will provide practical tips for utilizing digital platforms and social media to share stories widely, ensuring that their impact reaches a broader audience. Attendees will also gain insight into the ethical considerations involved in storytelling, including patient confidentiality, obtaining consent, and avoiding exploitation.
Finally, the workshop will emphasize the use of storytelling for fundraising. Attendees will learn how to craft narratives that resonate with potential donors and how to incorporate stories into donor reports, grant proposals, and fundraising campaigns. At the end of the session, participants will have gained practical knowledge and skills to effectively use storytelling as a strategic tool for advocacy, community engagement, and fundraising in their mobile clinics. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how to create and share narratives that highlight the importance of their work, inspire action, and ultimately help secure resources they need to continue serving their communities.
Learning Objectives: Demonstrate skills necessary to craft compelling narratives that highlight the impact of mobile clinic work. Identify effective storytelling techniques for different audiences including best practices for social media, donor reports, and public speaking.
